I am asking this for a friend. she uses jaws 8 and she says while in a IM if she has to backspace the first few letters are spoken but after that it just says space. Any ideas?

Yes. What I believe happens is that if you back space so many times the whole IM gets deleted. I'd suggest using the arrow keys to read then correcting at the point lost by starting at the beginning of the word she wants to correct. I personally use the arrow keys to read the message before sending and you can use the say all to read it before sending.

I also am a firm believer in arrow keys.

I wish more people would use the arrow keys before sending a message. I do make my own share of mistakes while typing, sure. i'm not perfect. Hell if I sent out every single message as it was without making a few corrections, you probably wouldn't even be able to read what I wrote. In fact I've made several mistakes typing this very message, but thanks to the backspace key and correcting my own mistakes, you can actually understand what I'm saying! So yes, make use of those arrow keys, y'all!

Try to change the font.

That's easy, but may mess up the reading totally, so be careful doing that. Don't believe that's the trouble though.
